I know we’ve kind of discussed this before, but I had to take a quick pic the other day of a parking lot I occasionally frequent. Why are these spaces this damn narrow? What am I supposed to do if I had a large car? I just don’t get the thinking sometimes

I think that the idea is that if the lines are closer together, you’re less likely to see the crossover over the line blocking your door.

First time I’ve ever seen these with orange signals.

That looks fairly sensible to me. The islands are to separate the spaces so that people don’t park all the way over to one side or the other.

Maybe at some point they were labeled “compact” which means any car older than 1990 won’t fit.

It’s a Jersey thing...no really the amount of narrow spots I’ve seen in jersey is ridiculous

That’s a vinyl overlay. I don’t care for the clear look, and they were pretty cheap. It helps a little bit to pick my car out of the crowd, since it’s such a common car and color

They look good! I have yellow overlays on my fogs (with 4300k HIDs) and they look awesome.

The narrower the space the more cars you can fit in the lot. I don’t think they realize that ‘Muricans like cars that are as big as the whole outdoors.

You do exactly what you did, you’re best.
Imagine a full size pickup pulling in, if the honda doesn’t fit they sure as hell don’t.
It’s one thing when the big cars don’t fit but this is crap, do your best is all you can in a lot like this.

Yeah, I get that theory. But as you said, we ‘Muricans like our cars big.
An interesting side point to this, I’ve only ever seen these comically narrow spaces in plazas that have (or used to have) a Kmart in them.

I remember those spaces. They were great when I drove a CRX. Sadly in this instance this is not the case. The entire parking lot is this way.

When you look at it that way, it kind of makes sense. But, I’m not convinced that people will do that, as evidenced by the Hyundai Veloster I saw in this same lot later that day that was way over to one side. And it was on the driver’s side no less. Apparently some people never learned to color in the lines in kindergarten.

I think when they make them that narrow but with the double lines instead of single, they’re just trying to encourage people to park in the center of a spot better. If they split the difference of the double lines and gave you that with a single line, people would go anywhere they’re within the lines and risk more boxing in of non-ModelX doors.

Move to England, our bays are too small for shenanigans - if you don’t park down the middle, you’re not in the bay.
